BLC10 - Reflections and Resources

David Jakes - Twitter: Can it really be used for education? - David's points are valid. There is the strong argument to use social networking technology with students and to model the power of this form of communication. One idea - Showing students a twitter fall during an important world event to model the power of one voice, participatory democracy, etc. At the same time the disparity of technology in the hands of students to participate may broaden the divide through these conversations. I am still on the fence.

Chir.ps - Well here is one twitter application that could bare fruit. You can record your response and then tweet it. The teacher could then follow the students in his/her class with all their tweets about a topic...

Poll Everywhere - You can use the internet to do polls!

Scratch - How many students when asked what they do in their free time or what they want to do in their lives it is to play video games or create video games? Well, now with free programing from MIT they can. They can also create, collaborate and share their passion for gaming with people all over the world. Check it out - the work that kids have done all over the world is truly amazing.

What is Web 3.0? - For that matter, what is 2.0?

Web 1.0 - Read only
Web 2.0 - Read and write
Web 3.0 - Organized data, personalized, customized in the search and the find. Personally organized- human driven data system.

  • Need to participate in training to bring students into it.

There is not any teacher in the system that is not part of a school system and they are background checked. Every account links with a real person. There is filter for language.

There are chat monitors - frame positive rules, norms from Indiana University
  • Same rules that are at play on the regular internet.
  • Students are not allowed to share their own email, phone, bullying,etc.
  • There are monitors who look and then email the teachers about any questionable chat. Teachers then use the experience to teach internet norms with students.
  • They also send the exemplary behaviors in online communication to teachers
  • all the content areas are represented
  • increases literacy
  • teachers contribute to content
  • no killing
  • leveling up is the curriculum
  • cyber safety
  • tranformative play

Teaching History with Technology

Nurturing the 21st Century Humanities Teacher

In a session with Tom Daccord, he shared his work with a team of teachers where they re-wrote a history course around themes. In some ways it sounds a lot like what we strive for but a times don't hold true to.

The turning point for his team was feeling far behind in the textbook as always.

“Needing to catch up” They asked themselves, "What is our mission as educators of history?" - independence - Goal is not your mission - nurture skills in kids. Goal is to cover content - Mission is to nurture skills to develop independence in learning!

Skills v Content

So their course centered around:

Year long course around 5 questions

Needing to ask meaningful questions -essential questions for the course and which for what will be studies

  • To what extent is America a land of opportunity?
  • What is the proper role of government in the lives of Americans?
  • What is America’s place in the world?
  • What is the problem is race in American history?
Leads to other questions - but begins with a big meaty question

Ideas for us - World History - social structure - looking at class in America today? Does medieval life have a comparison to

the America today?

World History was working on something similar - frustrated with the surface level of what they were teaching

Sept-Dec - Middle East - broke into politics, economics, religion - Is the conflict in the middle east unresolvable? - area studies, historical focus, geography, - have to have contemporary issues

A challenge: the teachers saw that students started to lose the sense of chronology - students needed an overview - as a group the students wrote their own reader. This makes me wonder about copyright.
